Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi-low starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of wagering choices and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
