Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
