Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only participant to achieve last game in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history competing against Daniel Negreanu. He won a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the greatest bettors around the world. While gambling on online poker, another side of Hansen has appeared. He often participates in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen usually buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He waits for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I know Gus is an excellent poker player but not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless Gus is broke, he has little or no reason to play at the game with the minimum buy-in.
Playing for the minimum takes most of the expertise out of deep stack poker. Gus is accepted to be 1 of the best poker players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total dollar value. I think tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best players anywhere in the world may be players you have won’t have heard of before.
