The three time World Poker Champion was born in New York in 1953 and started betting poker prior to becomming a teenager.
The young bettor started out playing gin and at the age of ten had won his initial gin tournament, while on vacation with his mother and father. By the time he turned 14 the little poker maestro had turned professional and dropped out of school.
In ‘54 Stu Ungar entered the record books by succeeding 10,000 dollars in a gin rummy tournament without dropping a single hand, a record which still appears in New York today.
The fast talking superstar has been likened, in poker terms, to sporting superstars like Joe Namath and Tiger Woods. Stu Ungar had a true ability for betting poker except regardless of his successes in Texas holdem poker, he favored playing gin.
Stu once said that there may a number of day be a better No Limit Holdem gambler than him but he could not see how anyone could ever be a greater gin gambler.
In 1980 Stu was put on the global map as one of the best Texas hold’em Poker players in the planet when he was crowned World Poker Champion for the very first time. Extraordinarily it was the first time he had entered the tournament.
