Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi/lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
