Gus Hansen enjoyed an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only gambler to make it to the final table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. Gus won a big pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the greatest players anywhere in the world. While competing in net poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. Gus often participates in the 200/400 NL max buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen generally buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and gambles very poorly. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I know Gus is a great poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to play at the table with the min buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes almost all of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be 1 of the greatest players in the world but he can’t buy in for the full dollar value. I think television can alter our view of the real world every now and then. The best players anywhere in the world might just be guys you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be seen participating in web poker on Full Tilt. He normally competes in big stakes Omaha and hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in cash games?
