Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his game happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He relocated to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
