Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Overview
July 23rd, 2020 by Angeline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
