Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline
August 23rd, 2021 by Angeline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high hand, and several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
