Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the final game in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a massive pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest bettors anywhere in the world. While playing net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. Gus frequently competes in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus generally buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very weak. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then goes all in. I know Hansen is an amazing poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has little or no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Playing for the minimum takes most of the expertise out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be one of the greatest poker players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the total amount. I think tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best poker players anywhere in the world might just be players you have will not have heard of before. Gus can be seen playing online poker on Full Tilt. He commonly competes in big stakes omaha hi-low and hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he use his skills in money games?
