August 1st, 2024 by Angeline

Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker competitor on the planet by most of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the negative feedback from others annihilate his goal of becoming one of the best poker players on the planet.

Phil began playing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated quite a few of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable love for the game of poker. He says that he’s learning every single day and is very humble about his success. Phil admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and always aspires to improve.

Even though Ivey has won some big tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
